Blepharolasty/Browplasty

Aesthetics is a specialty of oculoplastics that focuses on the outward appearance of the eye and surrounding eye structures. This includes mainly the eyelids and orbit. These are extremely complex structures that are vital to eyesight health and are important features of a normal facial appearance. At the Orbit Eye Center, we offer comprehensive services of surgical, and non-surgical solutions for facial and orbital rejuvenation. Dr. Walid Abdalla combines experience in microsurgical techniques of ophthalmology with the understanding of aesthetics and plastic surgery, therefore, he is uniquely qualified to perform delicate surgeries and to provide care to the eye itself.

Important Facts about Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a popular cosmetic procedure aimed at rejuvenating the appearance of the eyelids. Facts and figures surrounding blepharoplasty indicate its widespread demand and effectiveness. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 209,000 blepharoplasty procedures were performed in the United States alone in 2020. This demonstrates the growing interest in this procedure. Blepharoplasty addresses various aesthetic concerns such as droopy eyelids, excess skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags. It can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure typically involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and sometimes repositioning of the underlying tissues. Studies have shown high patient satisfaction rates, with individuals reporting improved self-confidence and a more youthful appearance post-surgery. Blepharoplasty is considered a safe procedure, with minimal risks and a relatively short recovery period. However, it’s crucial for individuals considering blepharoplasty to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine their candidacy and discuss potential outcomes and risks.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed for functional or cosmetic correction of the upper and lower eyelids. It can be conducted to treat sagging or loose skin over the eyes which can disturb the natural shape of the upper eyelid and impair vision, to remove lesions or correct certain conditions where the lid margin turns outward (ectropion) or inward (entropion). The surgery is also suggested for the correction of puffy eyes, bags under the eyes, excess fat and skin, drooping lower lid and fine wrinkles. This procedure helps to enhance the appearance of the eyelids and provides a more rejuvenated appearance.

Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia. Your surgeon will make an incision along the natural fold of skin above your eyelid so that the scars are concealed. For the lower eyelid, your surgeon will make an incision just below the eyelashes. Following this, the fat deposits may be repositioned, muscles and tissues tightened, and excess skin will be removed. The cut will then be closed with fine sutures.

Treatment of Eye Conditions with Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is commonly used to treat a variety of eye conditions in both adults and children. In children, blepharoplasty may be recommended to correct a number of conditions affecting the eyelids and the surrounding areas of the eyes. Here are some of the eye conditions in children that can be treated with blepharoplasty:

  • Congenital Ptosis: This is a condition in which one or both eyelids droop. In severe cases, it can interfere with vision and cause eye strain, headaches, and other problems. Blepharoplasty can be used to repair the muscles that control the eyelids and restore normal function and appearance.
  • Entropion: This is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward, causing irritation, redness, and discomfort. In children, entropion can be caused by congenital defects, trauma, or infections. Blepharoplasty can be used to reposition the eyelid and restore normal function.
  • Ectropion: This is a condition in which the eyelid turns outward, causing irritation, redness, and dryness of the eye. In children, ectropion can be caused by congenital defects, trauma, or infections. Blepharoplasty can be used to reposition the eyelid and restore normal function.
  • Dermatochalasis: This is a condition in which the skin around the eyes becomes loose and saggy, causing a tired or aged appearance. In children, it may be caused by genetics or other factors. Blepharoplasty can be used to remove excess skin and fat around the eyes and restore a more youthful appearance.
  • Ptosis: This is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops, obstructing vision and causing eye strain. In children, it may be caused by muscle weakness or neurological disorders. Blepharoplasty can be used to reposition the eyelid and restore normal function.

What is Browplasty?

Browplasty or forehead lift is a cosmetic surgery that is performed to correct heavy eyelids and drooping eyebrows and to smooth out wrinkles on the forehead. It is often performed along with other procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and facelift surgery.

Procedure of Browplasty

Browplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, under local or general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make an incision from the level of the ears, along the natural hairline. Instead of one long incision (open technique), smaller incisions can be made using an endoscope (fiber-optic tube with a lighted camera attached). The forehead skin is pulled up and excess skin is removed. The muscles at the upper part of the nose forming the frown lines and forehead wrinkles may also be adjusted. The incisions are then closed with stitches or staples. You may experience bruising and swelling for a few days, which will gradually subside. Follow your surgeon’s instructions for a successful outcome.

The longevity of blepharoplasty results varies among individuals due to factors like aging, genetics, and lifestyle. Generally, blepharoplasty can provide long-lasting improvements for around 5 to 10 years or more.

The recovery time for blepharoplasty can vary based on individual healing rates and the extent of the procedure. Generally, patients can expect a recovery period of about 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, bruising and swelling may gradually subside, and stitches are often removed within the first week.

Yes, blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The choice depends on the patient’s preferences, the extent of the procedure, and the surgeon’s recommendation. Some patients prefer to be awake with local anesthesia and sedation, which keeps them relaxed and comfortable during the surgery. Others opt for general anesthesia to remain completely unconscious during the procedure.
