Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a type of eyelid surgery that deals with droopy upper eyelids or bags under the eye due to excess skin and fat. This occurs due to the natural aging of the eyelid and skin stretching overtime or also may happen at a younger age due to genetics. Droopy upper eyelids are managed by an eyelid lift and eyebags are managed by a lower eyelid bag surgery. The procedure is done by making small incisions in the natural creases of the eyelid. The excess skin and fat are then removed, repositioned and/or reshaped. The incisions are then closed with small sutures. This has a dramatic effect on the face and help maintain a youthful look. In some cases, sagging skin in the upper eyelid may impair peripheral vision.

Ptosis

Ptosis is a condition where the upper eyelid droops due to the eyelid muscles not being able to hold the upper eyelid. The distinction of ptosis compared to a droopy eyelid caused by excess fat or skin is that the levator muscle responsible for lifting the eye is weakened. The former is managed by an upper eyelid lift as mentioned above while the latter is managed by upper eyelid surgery or ptosis surgery where the levetator muscle is tightened. The cause of ptosis can be congenital (present at birth), experiencing a trauma, or most commonly due to aging.
